Your New Mailbox Is Here, Orchestra’s Gmail Client Arrives in App Store
Sometimes all it takes is a screenshot or two to get sold on a new iPhone app when it hits the App Store. These instances are few and far between though, and we’re especially skeptical when a third-party wants to get in there and mess with our iPhone’s essential functions.
Like email. I think we’d all agree that it’s one of the must essential tasks we do with our smart devices. So Orchestra had a big hill to climb when they set out to make a Gmail client that would make Apple’s native offering look ancient and clumsy… But that’s exactly what they did with a new app called Mailbox [App Store Link], which just became available and is now falling into the hands of the lucky ones who made reservations back in January.
Without having had the chance to mess with Mailbox just yet, we can say that it LOOKS stellar, and it also appears to perform just as well if the video is any indication. The mail client features some super slick swipe gestures that accomplish the purpose of “putting email in its place.” Orchestra wants to help us clear our inboxes, whether that means click deletions or “snoozing” messages for later in a way that’s very Boomerang-esque. You even get a nice, “You’re all done” message upon clearing the tray.
So that’s what we know about Mailbox from the outside, and unfortunately no matter how good it sounds it might be awhile before we can all get in on the action. Orchestra’s reservation list was meant to prevent a server overload, and until they open the floodgates only those with pre-registrations get to set the tone for Mailbox going forward.
