We’ve seen inside the new iPod Touch, and here’s what we found

Okay, so we didn’t see inside the new iPod Touch ourselves, but the folks at iFixit did their thing, and here’s what we found out as a result…

Apple’s new iPod is, quite obviously, a lot thinner than the iPhone 5, but the design differences run deeper than that. As many of you know, it runs on an Apple-designed A5 processor with 512MB of RAM. Other components similarly inferior to those inside the iPhone 5 include a display with a “cheaper design” and a “weaker home button.”

Those aren’t the most descriptive words, but it seems like Apple’s overall design approach had to be substantially different in order to make the new iPod Touch all of 6.1mm thick… As far as suppliers, some of the big players providing parts are Toshiba,  Broadcom, Texas Instruments, and Murata… That might not mean a lot to you, but it’s certainly noteworthy that the NAND flash in the new iPod Touch was NOT provided by Samsung—since we’re all well aware of the tension there.

Finally, what kind of torture should you expect if you need to get inside the new iPod Touch and make a repair? iFixit paints a pretty bleak picture in that regard, scoring the device 3 out of 10 in repairability, and warning that this particular iPod is held together by a lot more than you might expect.

So, does any of this change your opinion of Apple’s new iPod, or is it still totally worth $299/$399?
