Watch Out Siri, Google is Doing Better at Answering Questions Through Voice Search
It seems that not a day goes by without Siri getting challenged by some new startup. Some of these services have been better than others, but no previous competitor has come bearing the Google name… Now, through an update to their Google Search app
, one of Apple’s top competitors has made a strong entry into the voice-operated personal assistant realm.
While the big update to Google Search doesn’t hack into your iPhone’s native functions like calling, texting, or scheduling, it doesn’t contend with Siri when it comes to basic abilities like giving you the weather, finding a restaurant, and answering questions. Questions that give you an immediate response include stock prices, translations, conversions, sports, trivia, math, weather, locations, images, time, events and flight status. What’s more, early impressions indicate that it responds to your spoken queries in good time—which is more than can be said about Siri, depending on the day.
After getting announced several months ago, it’s nice to have this expanded capability added to Google Search, but really, unless you’re making a point there’s hardly any reason to choose it over Siri. Unless you live in the Google Search app and don’t want to leave its environment to take a little side trip with Siri, then the biggest impact of this update is that it demonstrates how closely Google is tracking Apple and able to replicate certain functions.
Siri better stay on top of her game—and that might very well mean that Apple needs to improve performance through whatever means necessary… What do you think, does Siri still beat the competition soundly, or could your affections be stolen by a competitor?
