In-Cell Touch Panels could allow Apple to Achieve a Thinner, Lighter Next-Gen iPhone
If you made a graph showing the size and weight of Apple products over the years, there’s no doubt that things would trend toward thinner and lighter as time goes on. For that reason, we feel pretty confident that the next-gen iPhone will sport a radically different design—one that might even reduce the device’s already-minimal bulk… That idea became easier to believe today when supply chatter pointed to an in-cell touch panel for the iPhone 5.
You might not know it, but your current iPhone (whatever generation it is) doesn’t work off just one magic pane of glass on the front. Instead, the on-cell panels are comprised of a combination of layers that allow for touch-sensitivity and pixel display… Combine it all into one panel and you save on space and weight—two factors in which Apple has shown supreme interest with prior designs.
So, as rumors go, this one definitely falls on the plausible side. If Apple can save money and deliver an even better aesthetic experience, it’s hard to come up with a con associated with switching to in-cell panels. For a more technical explanation, we quote Digitimes:
“The adoption of in-cell touch panels, if realized, will also have a significant impact on the operations of Apple’s current touch panel suppliers TPK Holdings and Wintek, which are specialized in the production of glass on glass touch solutions currently… TPK said that it is developing TOL (touch on lens) single-glass touch solutions, which will be more suitable for the production of high-end customized devices and that the market will accommodate more than one technology.”
… We’re pretty sure that translates to—“everybody wins.”
