Here is AT&T’s depressing statement about FaceTime over 4G
It was bad enough when we found out that AT&T would be charging something extra for FaceTime over cellular in iOS 6, and now the ugly details are coming to the surface. In an official statement from the company, all hopes were dashed that FaceTime over 4G would come to us customers at minimal hassle and cost:
“AT&T will offer FaceTime over Cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans, which were created to meet customers’ growing data needs at a great value. With Mobile Share, the more data you use, the more you save. FaceTime will continue to be available over Wi-Fi for all our customers.”
Thanks, AT&T, for being gracious enough to let us continue to use FaceTime over Wi-Fi, that really lessens the blow of forcing everyone to change plans and pay more if they want to use Apple’s video calling feature over a cellular network.
AT&T hasn’t even launched the Mobile Share data plans yet (It starts on August 23rd), and they expect everyone to switch to that plan when the next iPhone is released?
As for AT&T’s 4G data plans, not only is the 4G coverage of AT&T laughable when held up against a competitor like Verizon, but the company is showing some remarkable ineptitude when it comes to leveraging what coverage they DO have.
So if your contract is coming to a close and you’ll be looking at the options when it comes time to upgrade to the next-gen iPhone, consider how Sprint’s stance on 4G FaceTime differs from AT&T:
“We are committed to our unlimited data and that means not charging for data consumption based on the application.”
Unless I’m missing something, there are few, if any reasons, to remain an AT&T customer at this point… In fact, if you can think of one, let us know!
