Google Maps App for iOS might be Right Around the Corner
Election season is finally over, but the flip-flopping continues. The media can’t quite decide how it feels about an official Google Maps app in the iOS App Store, so one day we’re hearing that it might never happen, and next the Wall Street Journal says Google is putting on the finishing touches.
Now that it looks like the Google Maps app will most definitely get submitted, all eyes will be on Apple to see whether or not it gets approved. The WSJ sees the Google Maps app as a pivotal moment as well:
“The head-to-head battle between Apple and Google in mobile apps is drawing near… Google has distributed a test version of its new mapping app that will work on Apple’s iPhones to some individuals outside the company, said a person with direct knowledge of the matter. Google has been putting the finishing touches on the app before submitting it for approval to the Apple iTunes store… though it’s unclear exactly when that will happen.”
I guess this means Nokia won’t be offering the only legitimate alternative to Apple’s Maps in iOS 6, which is great news, because everyone knows we could use as many options as we get… A Google Maps app could prove especially interesting if it ends up containing turn-by-turn navigation—a feature that was never offered in previous versions of the built-in service.
So there’s hope yet for a Google Maps app… For now, anyway!
