Gameloft’s Order and Chaos Online Gets New Race, Christmas Content, and Price Cut!
As promised (though never previewed), Gameloft released a significant new update for Order and Chaos Online this week. While not as game-impacting as the last update (PvP Arena), the “Mendel Rising” update certainly brings some great new content to the App Store’s top MMORPG.
The Mendel Rise
The biggest new content in the game is the addition of the Mendel, the first new race in OnC since its initial release. These small, pastel-colored creatures are considered “neutral” in the Order and Chaos mythos (though in-game this doesn’t mean much). Like all the OnC races, they can be of any class and can mingle freely with all other races.
Mendel are almost jarringly cute, in contrast to the general design of Order and Chaos. They’re short, with big heads, big eyes, floppy ears, and animal noses. They reflect a clear anime influence, something that doesn’t quite jive with the game’s general Western RPG flavor. Still, it’s nice to see OnC establishing something more original than “gnomes” or “goblins”.
Along with the Mendel comes a great new starting zone. The underground Mendel Village is nicely designed and a welcome change for people who have leveled multiple characters before. It offers a handful of new quests before shuttling Mendel PCs into Silence to pick up in the standard leveling progression.
Gameloft has also resurrected most of last year’s Christmas content in time for the holiday season. Like last year, the purposely-misspelled Crismas Island is back, along with holiday decorations in all the major towns and the holiday-themed quests. One thing missing this year seems to be the randomly spawned gift chests. At least, I haven’t seen any; if you have, be sure to tell me where!
The Christmas fun extends to IAPs, of course; items like the snowman and elf are back, and their prices are lower. In addition to last year’s purchasable pets and goodies, there is a reindeer mount this year, too.
The other big addition this update is another dungeon. Called Eidolon’s Horizon, it’s located right next to The Suspended City, and as you can see from the screenshot, it isn’t much to look at from the surface.
Inside, the dungeon continues Gameloft’s apparent (though maybe not intentional) design of “faux leveling,” making each dungeon harder than the last so that you need to not only be Level 60, but geared to a certain level in order to survive. Early impressions are that the first boss, Healique, is the hardest. If you’re lucky, you might get a new epic drop for your troubles.
In addition to the above major updates, there are some other changes as well.
All races, including the new Mendel, received race-specific abilities this update. While none of the abilities is really impressive — a +1 to dodge, a faster eating time, and so forth — they’re a neat little addition that makes the game feel a little more robust.
Gameloft also lowered the cost of purchasable mounts from the stupidly ridiculous 1,999 gold to the only moderately ridiculous 999 gold. I still think this is crazy high, but it’s better than before.
In addition to purchasable mounts, Gameloft introduced capturable mounts in this update. Capturing requires an IAP item (of course!) with a 1-in-3 success rate, and the spots where these mounts appear are pretty heavily camped right now, but they’re out there for the willing and curious.
There are other minor changes as well. It’s a lot of content to experience. If you’re curious, I recommend logging in and checking it out! It’s on sale right now for 99 cents, which makes it a great time to try.
