Forget Samsung, It turns out RIM Was Responsible for “Wake Up” Protest at Apple Store

We take it back. It wasn’t Samsung that orchestrated the awkward “Wake Up” protest that occurred recently at an Apple Store location in Australia… Instead, we now know that RIM (Research In Motion) was the culprit.

countdown to BlackBerry 10 OS

Instead of sleuthing this one out, the protest mystery pretty much solved itself. First, Samsung stepped forward a few days ago and basically said, “We like it, but it wasn’t us.” Fair enough. That left us hanging as to who might have dressed a bus-full of people in black and equipped them with matching “Wake Up” signs. The purpose of the “campaign” was as confusing as the method itself.

… Would anyone have guessed RIM if they hadn’t come right out and said it? Samsung made a lot of sense, seeing as they’ve executed direct attacks against Apple in the past, and you’d think they’d be interested in doing something extreme to push the Galaxy S III Android phone. But we failed to recall that RIM’s got something big going on, too (they hope). It’s BlackBerry 10 OS, and it’s slated for release later this year. So it appears they’re taking preemptive measures to “Wake Up” iPhone users and get them to consider alternatives (or at least be open to considering, when the time comes around).

The Apple Store protest isn’t the only manifestation of the “Wake Up” campaign. The signage has also been spotted on a Bondi Beach pool bottom, as well as on the side of a speedboat… So yeah, RIM is going all out, and probably for good reason. I mean, when thinking about Apple’s biggest competitors who might have staged the protest, I’ll be honest, they didn’t even come to mind…
