Don’t expect that new Google Maps app anytime soon on iOS 6, as Google reportedly Caught Off-Guard by Apple

The documentation for iOS 6 Maps fails is growing everyday, and meanwhile, it appears we’re no closer to getting an App Store offering from Google, as new reports show that being dropped from Apple’s mobile operating system came as a total surprise to the Mountain View, California company.

At the time that iOS 6 and the iPhone 5 launched, there was one year left on the Google Maps agreement between Google and Apple. As we’re all painfully aware at the time of this writing, Apple opted to push a wildly unready Maps app into iOS 6 before the agreement with Google came to term—and their reasons for doing so are still shrouded in mystery.

According to Google Executive Chariman Eric Schmidt, the company has not “done anything yet with Google Maps,” and that can only mean terrible things for the timetable of getting a Google Maps savior in the App Store. At the very best, we’re probably looking at months, and it seems like the only entity to blame for that is Apple.

Even though Apple’s decision in iOS 6 seems questionable, there’s an element in which you’d expect Google to see this coming. After all, Apple’s acquisition of mapping companies began in 2009, and wouldn’t it have been in Google’s best interest to release a Google Maps app the day they’re dropped from iOS?

Of course, this discussion points to the question of how Apple would go about the approval process of such an app, or whether they’d find a way to reject it—despite the continued negative effects that would probably have on customer satisfaction.
