Count It! 40 Billion iPhone/iPad Apps Downloaded, with 20 Billion Downloads in 2012
If Apple can keep this pace, then 2013 is set to be an incredible year for the App Store… As of right now, more than 40 billion apps have been downloaded by iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch users, and nearly half of that gargantuan number can be attributed to 2012 alone.
It’s a pretty staggering figure—one that Apple decided was deserving of its own press release. The 40 billion app number was reached after December closed out with a record two billion downloads all on its own. It’s quite obvious that total app downloads is a number that’s going to continue to snowball as more and more iOS devices fall into the hands of people who will inevitably become App Store regulars. Eddy Cue has this to say on the heals of a big 2012:
“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community. Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”
Okay, so December and the year of 2012 were especially lucrative in terms of downloads—but it turns out the App Store’s daily average is now 50 million, which is hardly any less impressive!
It’s safe to say all bets are off for 2013, a year in which Apple will face the challenge of keeping this incredible momentum going. Should they be able to, they’ll no doubt have developers to thank. Titles like Temple Run, SketchBook, and Action Movie FX all get a mention in the press release, and it goes to show that Apple is counting on more of the same innovation from those who will continue to develop for their mobile platform in the coming year.
