Chomp no more. Apple Discontinues this standalone app as many of its features take over App Store

Most of us have been using iOS 6 for at least a few weeks now, so even if you’ve never heard of an app called Chomp, the chances are you’re familiar with how it works… See, Apple spent a tidy $50 million to acquire Chomp earlier this year, and then they went ahead and baked their favorite Chomp features into the native mobile operating system. And now? Chomp has been wiped from the App Store—an easily predictable development that has now come to fruition.

The disappearance of Chomp occurred on the same date that Ping quietly died, September 30^th. While it’s presumed that Apple’s acquisition of Chomp resulted in back-end improvements we’ll never really see, the consumer response to the redesigned App Store in iOS 6 has been mixed. Chomp-style app shopping is definitely slicker, but it’s also more limited, since the single-tile presentation means you see only one app at a time and it takes more scrolling to get deeper into the results.

The iOS app wasn’t the only Chomp property that got killed. Try and visit chomp.com and you’ll now be redirected to apple.com… None of this should come as a surprise, and the only group that could be negatively effected would be those holding onto the Chomp app despite its integration with iOS 6.
