AT&T Plans to Offer Family Data Plans
Shared family data plans—we knew they would come eventually, and now it looks like AT&T might be the first carrier to offer the long-awaited option. We’re used to sharing voice minutes with our spouses, parents, kids, or what have you, so why not bring the same feature to the precious data we consume on our smartphones? AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega says his company has come up with a plan, and while there’s no release date, everyone is now expecting it to happen soon.
Family data plans could meet the needs of a wide array of customers. Whether you burn through data like it’s your job or just chip away ever-so-slightly at your monthly allowance, joining up with a family member should—in most cases—mean a more economical usage of the data at hand. Less wasted data and a price that’s easier to swallow definitely makes this a win for the consumer, and de la Vega’s comments lead us to believe that AT&T has solved the billing and IT issues that held this service back for so long.
So there you have it. The family data plans are expected to apply across devices, so now members of team Android and team iOS that reside in the same household (or are on the same plan) can try and get a long in at least this one way… AT&T is likely not the only carrier going down this road, so it will be interesting too see how things compare when the others catch up.
