AT&T Opens FaceTime over LTE to Individual users, Drops Mobile Share Limitation

Now we’re moving in the right direction… I’m pretty sure nobody was satisfied back when AT&T declared that you’d have to be on one of their Mobile Share plans in order to access FaceTime over LTE, but it’s taken the cellular company this long to drop the limitation and open up the “service” to anyone using an iPhone 5 or LTE-enabled iPad.

You can head over to AT&T’s stimulating “Public Policy Blog” for some official comments from the company.  They’d clearly have us think that the original FaceTime limitation was enacted out of caution and a need to protect the network under the significant iPhone usage, but we’re not totally confident they weren’t seeing it as a great way to push users to the Mobile Share plan… Either way, here’s AT&T’s Jim Cicconi on the coming change:

“… we are announcing today that we will support FaceTime, not only on our Mobile Share plans, but also on all of our tiered data plans with an LTE device. We expect to roll out this functionality over the next 8-10 weeks.”

Cicconi goes on to say that some new billing plans will be made available to AT&T customers who are deaf or hard of hearing. That way, those individuals might have a more affordable way to make use of FaceTime for their communication needs.

AT&T now joins Sprint and Verizon in offering FaceTime over LTE at no extra charge—like it should have been in the first place across all carriers!
