Apple’s Huge Spaceship-style Campus Plans announced by Steve Jobs

First Apple rocks the tech world by revealing its upcoming leap into the cloud services, and now Steve Jobs goes even further into the clouds by announcing that he’s basically planning to build a spaceship-style campus right here on Earth.

The news broke during a Cupertino City Council meeting, but it wasn’t a complete surprise, as last year saw Apple buy up 98 acres of land near Interstate 280. But as the details continue to be divulged, the new campus is sounding more and more sci-fi… It will be shaped as one big circle, four-stories tall all the way around. At the center of the structure, Jobs plans for there to be something like 6,000 trees. There will also be a natural gas center, meaning that California power will only be used as a backup… “Apple has grown like a weed,” Jobs said at the front of his presentation, and the company’s continuing need to rent more and more space has apparently called for this 12,000 person facility. Jobs was clear to note that he deeply appreciates the land’s history, and Apple wants to preserve that as best they can by leaving 80% of the property as landscaping and putting most of the parking underground.

So how did the city council respond? Well, if the standing ovation meant anything, then it looks like everyone is on board. Should things go without a hitch, the mothership could be complete by 2015.
