Apple’s Find My Friends app May Have Caught a Cheating Wife

How about a little household drama brought to us direct by the iPhone 4S? Well, more specifically, this tale of infidelity was brought to us by Find My Friends, the new application from Apple that allows users to track each others’ locations. They say it’s good for meeting friends at unmapped places like the beach, or providing assistance with directions. But it turns out that it’s also good for confirming suspicions that one’s lover isn’t being true.

This story was unearthed in a MacRumors forum. Sure, it could all be faked, but there’s no denying that the scenario is entirely plausible… A guy gets his wife an iPhone 4S and enables Find My Friends without her knowledge. One night she goes out and says she’s going one place, when Find My Friends clearly shows her location as being somewhere else. In fact, she was in uptown—just where the spouse had figured she might be, presumably in order to meet some other guy. Below is what was posted to the forum thread.

“Divorcing wife. Thanks iPhone 4s and Find My Friends.

“I got my wife a new 4s and loaded up find my friends without her knowing. She told me she was at her friends house in the east village. I’ve had suspicions about her meeting this guy who live uptown. Lo and behold, Find my Friends has her right there.

“I just texted her asking where she was and the dumb b**** said she was on 10th Street!! Thank you Apple, thank you App Store, thank you all. These beautiful treasure trove of screen shots [sic] going to play well when I meet her … at the lawyer’s office in a few weeks.

“thankfully, she’s the rich one.”

Need some more realistic touches to complete your mental picture of this iSoap Opera? The guy included some screenshots from Find My Friends and iMessage… Fake or not, this is exactly what can happen when location tracking goes wrong. Of course, the privacy settings are all there, but as was the case with this poor sap’s wife, what happens when a user is unaware that attention needs to be given to when and where one’s location is shared?

You could have done this with Find My iPhone. Not sure why this is all of sudden a big deal
