Apple Runs Out of iPhone 5 for Delivery on Launch Day after Just 1 Hour of Preorder Event
Well, the iPhone 5 officially went up for preorder about 12 hours ago, and the world hasn’t ended… However, Apple has run out of units available for September 21st delivery, if you trust the shipping estimates currently being displayed.
Those of you who went to Apple.com to secure your new iPhone probably ran into problems if you didn’t hit the store within the first hour of availability. According to pretty much everyone reporting on the matter, Apple’s launch-day stock dried up about 22x faster than did the 4S, if you go by the 22 hours reported last year. For the iPhone 5, it was a wait of 2-4 weeks for those who didn’t manage to get in on time, and you can bet that issues like site lag, failed shopping carts, and random crashes all compounded the difficulty of the matter.
Luckily, hope remains for those who want a launch day iPhone but would prefer to avoid camping outside a retail store. Carriers such as Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon are apparently still able to offer launch-day delivery—which makes you wonder if Apple is only saying 2-4 weeks to be on the safe side or if the carriers sites are displaying the correction shipping date. If you want an iPhone 5 on September 21st, you might want to look to your carrier!
So should we be surprised by the first 9 hours of iPhone 5 availability? As has become standard following keynotes, the last few days brought up murmurs of Apple’s “lack of innovation” by keeping the general shape of the iPhone 4 and failing to announce any earth-shattering new features… But it seems like the customers spoke up as soon as they could, and they did it louder than ever before.
