Apple posts Weird Legal Notice on Website, Acknowledging Samsung’s legal “Victory” in the UK

This is as close as Samsung will ever get to winning the major legal dispute that raged between them and Apple earlier this year. Sure, they gave up over $1 billion to Apple in the end, but in the process a UK judge ruled that Apple should have to post an acknowledgement that they were not copied by Samsung.

And thus, we have this weird little page that can now be found on Apple.com if you search for it in the footer of the UK site. Even though the admission that they supposedly were not copied by Samsung ends up reflecting well on Apple due to the judge’s chosen language, the page is still presented in the most minimalist manner we’ll probably ever see from them… Here’s the first paragraph of the judge’s ruling, which gives you an idea of how strange and inconsequential a “win” this was for Samsung.

“The extreme simplicity of the Apple design is striking. Overall it has undecorated flat surfaces with a plate of glass on the front all the way out to a very thin rim and blank back. There is a crisp edge around the rim and a combination of curves, both at the corners and the sides. The design looks like an object the informed user would want to pick up and hold. It is an understated, smooth and simple product. It is a cool design.”

From that perspective, compared with whatever Samsung put forward, this judge just couldn’t rule that infringement was committed. Which is actually kind of funny…

Got to hand it to Apple for figuring out how to publically apologize in a way that makes the whole thing seem like a joke!
