Push Notifications coming to Mobile Twitter

The folks at Twitter aren’t letting Apple’s Ping get all the social networking attention these days. Yesterday saw the release of Twitter’s official iPad app (with mixed first impressions), and now Mashable has gotten word from Twitter itself that they’re testing push notification in-house and planning to release the feature to the public soon.

I don’t know why, but I can’t call myself I regular Tweeter. For some reason, Facebook is more than enough for me, and I haven’t gotten in the habit of using Twitter on my phone or my computer. But back when I was trying to get interested since it seemed so required to be an American, I shopped around the third-party Twitter clients looking for one that would give me real-time updates in the form of push notifications. I liked the idea of never checking in with the app and just getting all my info pushed in front of my face. It wasn’t available then, and I haven’t followed whether other clients have released the feature up to this point, but now the 8% of Twitter users that access it through Twitter for iPhone will get to switch on “push.”

It’s worth noting, also, that this seems to be the week of leaked features to certain users. Some of the first Ping users got to connect with Facebook even though Jobs stated that they had not come to an agreement. And now a “configuration error” has led to a few of those who first downloaded Twitter for iPad getting push messages. Twitter has stopped supporting the premature push feature, but they warn that certain users may still see the option to turn push on until an update is released.

As far as a release date for the new feature, a rep for the company stated, “Push isn’t ready yet, but we look forward to rolling this out soon.”
