iOS Surpasses Linux as 3rd most popular internet platform behind Windows and Mac

Those sales figures Steve Jobs and Apple are always talking about? Well, they’re more than just numbers. The iOS mobile platform now ranks third as the most popular way to access the internet. The actual percentage of market share is still quite low, but for a mobile platform, Apple’s iOS is leaps ahead. As Vice President of NetApps Vince Vizzaccaro puts it, “Whatever the sales are, we’re seeing iOS totally dominate the market on the Web. iOS has nearly a 6:1 advantage over Android.”

These statistics have come to our attention since iOS just surpassed Linux to take third place. iOS now has a 1.1% share of the market, as compared to Mac OS X’s 5% and Window’s enormous 91.3% share. But the point is, mobile platforms are on the move, displaying a huge growth curve. Android is expected to gain ground on iOS as mainstream consumers continue to embrace it, but the chances of Linux reasserting itself seem . . . less likely.

As we all know, iOS just received a shot in the arm. The Apple Keynote on Tuesday saw them unveil a redesigned iPod Touch, as well as a preview of iOS 4.2 for iPad (coming later this fall). Obviously, these devices will be used to access the web and grow that percentage share . . . Android’s current share is 0.2 percent, but no one expects it to stay that low for long. Along with iOS, it will likely eat up a larger percentage in the near future, as the mobile wave continues. Again, Vince Vizzacarro says it well: “It’s something to take note of when a mobile operating system passes something that’s been around forever . . . Mobile’s growth curve is strong and mobile is becoming quite a phenomenon on the Internet.”
