Twitter Update Supports Multitasking on iOS 4
So far, I’m still waiting patiently for iOS 4 updates for many of my favorite apps. But Twitter fanatics got lucky today, as the update that was just made available supports iOS 4’s multitasking capabilities, and allows users to keep Twitter twitting while they switch over to other apps.
It’s funny that, only days after iOS 4 became available, I already feel like it’s ridiculous that most of my apps (including all games, in particular) don’t function with multitasking. Perhaps we require frequent reminders that updates like this can’t happen instantaneously. Nonetheless, we do expect that most apps will be updated shortly so as to support iOS 4 features. Twitter now leads the way as one of the first mega-popular third-party apps that will keep running in the background.
But Multitasking isn’t the sole focus of this new version of the Twitter app. Formerly known as Tweetie, the client was officially acquired by Twitter only months ago and made to be free. Along with iOS 4 support, the newest version of Twitter on iPhone fixes the “stuck top tweets” bug, and uses something called Oauth to allow for more secure tweeting and photo/video posting . . . While I know I’m one of the last people on earth who doesn’t use Twitter, I’m tempted to download it just to make better use of multitasking on my phone. Ridiculous? Yes. But as it stands, I’m getting tired of apps doing a complete re-launch when I select them from my multitasking list. And if getting addicted to Twitter is what it takes to see the feature work correctly, hey, I’ll give it a try.
