iPhone 4 Launches with Long Lines Everywhere

Perhaps you’re reading this from the comfort of your own home with your pre-ordered iPhone 4 about to arrive at any time. If so, count yourself among the lucky few, because the majority of Apple fans around the country are waiting in line.

I woke up at about 5:30 this morning and drove across town for my usual Thursday ice hockey session. I passed an AT&T and a Best Buy along the way and sure enough, they were lined up around the block. But I live in a fairly small city, and what I saw is nothing compared to what’s going on in places like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. The headlines will use words like “insane” and “crazy” to describe those who lined up hours or days ahead of time, but isn’t that part of the fun of launch day?

Justin Wagoner from Dallas went so far as to set up camp on Knox Street ONE WEEK before the release of iPhone 4. What does he get for his devotion? Well, besides some attention from the press and a pretty solid guarantee of getting his iPhone today, he’ll certainly always remember camping for a week in the heat of a Texas summer. The verdict is still out on how much of a game-changer this new phone will become, but at the very least, he can always hang on to that memory.

We’ve also heard reports of someone in San Francisco who attempted to rent out tent space at the front of the line for a $300. Then there’s Greg Packer in Texas, who is being sponsored by Gazelle just to stand in a line.

Maybe we’ve all gone crazy, but June 24th is living up to it’s hype. You’ve got to give it that.
