AT&T Blames Apple for lack of iPad Tethering
Following AT&T’s recent changes in data plan options, and the public outcry from these changes AT&T is going on the offensive with Apple.
According to Tech Flash in an interview with AT&T they received this terse response:
An AT&T spokeswoman told us via email today that it won’t be possible to tether the iPhone to the iPad to share Internet access with the Apple slate, citing the fact that the iPad doesn’t have any USB ports to enable a wired connection between the devices.
In an obvious swipe at Apple, Mac expert Glen Fleishman “discovered in testing that the iPad includes the Bluetooth profile required for tethering, but it is not enabled.”
The Apple site itself clearly states the iPad has Bluetooth capabilities.
What, what? If this is true, Apple is just messing with people. Why would they fail to allow something that would make life easier for iPad users. Money. Why buy a data plan for your iPad if you could simply get by with your iPhone?
Many experts believe that AT&T makes huge cash payments to Apple for their exclusive coverage of the iPhone.
Given that at present there is no cable to connect the devices, the possibilities of tethering remain bleak.
Perhaps the jailbreaking community will find a way to switch the existing Bluetooth settings on the iPad, but until then we are left to dream.
Or curse Steve Jobs once again this year.
