Jailbreak Your iPad, iPod Touch 3G, and iPhone 3.1.3
While ready, and demonstrated some time ago, developers of the newest jailbreak option for these titled devices was recently released on the iPhone Dev Team website.
The team responsible for this jailbreak, named Spirit, held its release until the release of the 3G iPad. Jailbreaking as you know allows for the introduction of non-approved applications on each of these devices as well as the modification of backgrounds, sounds, and functions through programs such as Winterboard and Backgrounder.
Apple as always maintained that these jailbreaks jeopardize security, stability, and the battery life of these three platforms. While there is some truth to that, what else would they say? I have indeed noticed a few performance issues with my 3G iPhone when multitasking but I’m multitasking. Since I don’t live in the US and my iPhone was locked to AT&T there was little choice in the matter in order to use my phone. Often pe0ple forget the iPhone is still a phone with the now 200,000 applications available for it.
This newest jailbreak is, while working on other devices, designed for the iPad. Once jailbroken your iPad will have the luxury of multitasking and Google Voice among other benefits. One of those benefits has already been shown this week. With a bit of work developers have shown that T-mobile data plans can be used with the iPad, though only at Edge speeds. SMS messages are also being sent using networks other that AT&T’s though for now only from a terminal rather than an app.
We will continue to share with you the strides being made by the shadow developer community as additional offerings become available.
People who worry about voiding their warranties when these jailbreaks are installed have, for the most part, simply bought into the fear Apple is trying to instill in them. It is quite simple to restore your iPhone, iPad, etc. to its factory settings if not happy with your now jailbroken device.
Unfortunately there is no carrier unlock for the iPhone with Spirit Jailbreak. That said, if I was a newer 3GS user (firmware baseband 05.12.01) or mistakenly “upgraded” to OS 3.1.3, I would wait until OS 4.0 is released which has already been jailbroken but will not be released until the new OS is made available. Rumor has it that it will bear the name Limera1n and purportedly already works with OS 4.0 Beta.
For present users of jailbroken and/or unlocked phones, be especially careful of new updates to the 3.1 OS prior to 4.0 release. Not unlike 3.1.3, these updates will probably offer you nothing. This jailbreak is primarily for iPad users who are interested in multitasking before OS 4.0 is released in the fall.
