Info on the Iphone 4’s screen Sheds Light on Likely New Features and Predicted Demand

Even being an avid reader, I found it unremarkable when Steve Jobs announced iBooks as one of iPhone 4’s “tentpole” features. However, it’s beginning to look like the focus on text/book technology may have further implications than merely furthering the cause of reading. A lot of good that’s ever done . . .

What does it say about the new device’s screen, for instance? Well, we know Apple rejected adding an OLED screen after exploring the possibility, and will instead stick with an LCD IPS display. But this isn’t the same old screen . . . We can expect the new handset to have the same in-plane switching (IPS) as the iPad, allowing for better viewing angles in various light levels. Iphone 4 users will also benefit from fringe-field switching (FFS) technology, improving e-reader functions. Developing these features required that Apple not adopt an OLED display similar to the vibrant screen of the Nexus One. OLED is less suitable for displaying text, and thus not the best option for Apple while it continues to push e-reading as a highlighted feature.

Further, the iPhone 4 screen is expected to have a 960×640 pixel double-resolution display, and be 33 percent thinner (allowing room for the larger battery confirmed by Gizmodo).

Accompanying news on the new screen, we’ve learned that the manufacturer of iPhone 4, Foxconn, is set to ship 24 million units in 2010. But more importantly, they’ve also prepared a parallel product to the iPhone 4, a model offering less drastic changes from previous iPhones. This model was designed as a backup in the case of major shortages of the iPhone 4 we’ve seen leaked . . . This tidbit seems to be slipping under the radar, but could potentially be a big deal. Is it truly just a “backup”? Should we expect to have more than one option when iPhone 4 launches? Expect to hear more on this. A lot more, depending on what consumer demand does to the stock of iPhone 4s secretly piled in some special warehouse.
