iPhone to Multi-Task, Include Folders This Summer
Today was a day for many when they were collectively able to exclaim, “Finally!!” following the preview of the new OS 4.0 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. As Steve Jobs unveiled what he called “the next generation of the most advanced mobile operating system in the world”. For most? Yes, simply because there will be no multitasking support for iPhone models before the 3GS, leaving millions to exclaim, “You’ve got to be kidding me”.
While multi-tasking was high on many peoples wish lists, the new update, to be released this summer for the iPhone and sometime in the fall for the iPad, is just one of over 100 additions to the platform.
Not unlike cut and paste technology, Jobs admitted, “We weren’t first to this party, but we’re going to be the best,” Referring to a number of other operating systems, namely Android.
Some will undoubtedly be disappointed when they look over the fine print, this update will not allow the “multitasking” that many users crave, namely the ability to run multiple third party apps at the same time, this will continue to require the programs that only a jailbroken phone can provide.
It is, however, difficult to find any fault with Apple’s plan to include folders in order to keep some order to your applications. Recognizing the checker board layout present on the iPhone just wasn’t cutting it for users who house dozens of applications on their devices. The new app management in 4.0 will allow users to create folders simply by moving apps on to each other, thus, creating a default or customizable folder name. This will take the limit of apps available from around 200 to 2160 on a single device.
All and all a promising day, and we will bring you additional details here on this site throughout the coming weeks.
