Chaos Rings Arrives in App Store

A major new game hit the App Store. Chaos Rings (App Store Link), the iPhone exclusive RPG from Square Enix, makers of the Final Fantasy games, has arrived.
Previously, Square Enix has released a number of titles for iPhone, including ports of the first two Final Fantasy games and the music-themed Song Summoner. But this is the biggest, most robust iPhone release yet from the famed RPG maker. It is also the closest in production style to the company’s more recent offerings in the Final Fantasy console series.
In Chaos Rings, you take on the role of a pair of heroes who have been kidnapped from your home world. Trapped in an unknown land, you are being forced to compete against four other heroic pairings for not only your lives and your freedom, but also for the promise of eternal life. As you fight your way through monster-filled dungeons, you gain in experience and even take on the very aspects of the creatures you fight. All the while the mysterious Agent watches your progress, waiting for the time when you are strong enough to fight for your freedom.
First impressions of it are very positive. The game feels like a modern RPG, truly akin to the sorts of play experiences one would find on a console. Square Enix seems to have put a lot of development effort into this, with everything from the art to the music reflecting quality. Particularly neat is the choice they made for the control stick—allowing it to appear at anyplace under your thumb as opposed to locking it into a static position on screen.
So far, game play is pretty straightforward dungeon-crawling, and the turn-based combat system will be familiar to genre fans. It will be interesting if the game holds its appeal through to the end, or if the slick production values get lost in the leveling grind.
Zenonia 2 (See Zenonia 2 Review) was recently the best classic RPG experience the iPhone had ever seen. Chaos Rings wants to be the best RPG experience the iPhone has seen, period. Did they succeed? In addition to releasing Chaos Rings, Square Enix also put many of their other iPhone releases, including the aforementioned Final Fantasy ports, on sale for a limited time. You can find those games on Square Enix’s section of the App Store.
