The FCC Asks iPhone Users to Do Their Job
Well, perhaps not to do their job for them but assist them in tracking broadband speeds through the United States.
The app itself is nothing new. It has, for the most part, existed as Speedtest.net developed by Ookla, Inc. Essentially that same program has simply been upgraded in order to share this information with the FCC.
Privacy advocates shouldn´t worry too much. Frankly the FCC, in theory, knows where you are at all times. You will simply be sharing your IP address, location and broadband speeds.
The application is free and could become a great help if enough users participate. In a note from the FCC the app is said to “create awareness about the importance of broadband quality in accessing content and services over the Internet.”
