One Third of iPad Users Will Attempt to Save Publishing

Oddly the iBooks application will not come pre installed on the iPads arriving in two weeks time. The logic, if in fact there is any, suggests that Apple is interested in getting you to the iPad App Store hoping, perhaps, that you will purchase additional applications.

Surprisingly, only 27% of soon to be iPad users polled by comscore last week suggested that they would likely download software from the App Store, while over one third polled said they would likely use the iPad for the reading of books, newspapers, and magazines. Certainly these numbers will change as people realize that you can’t do one without the other.

A huge number of iPhone owners, over 50%, said they would be willing to subscribe to content formatted for an eReader, as opposed to just over 20% for the general public.

“These findings suggest that those who are already familiar and comfortable with making digital content purchases via iTunes may have a relatively higher receptivity to making similar purchases for the iPad,” the report said.

The same survey shows that demand for a yet unseen product, the iPad, already exceeds that of the Kindle. This should go without saying but this is the first printed survey detailing this point. With two weeks remaining the iPad seems primed for success and the publishing industry is grabbing for its coattails.
