iPhone OS 4.0 to Offer Multitasking
Apple Insider is reporting that according to reliable sources, Apple “has developed a full-on solution” to multitasking on the iPhone OS. The new OS is most likely going to be launched in the summer. No additional information regarding battery life and resource optimization are given.
For those who have jailbroken iPhones this will come as no surprise, the iPhone is capable of doing multiple things at once. But lets face it the iPhone has horrible battery life and multitasking will only make it worse.
While the iPhone OS 4.0 will not be released until summer, Apple knows that they run the risk of appearing stagnant when other OS´s, primarily Android, look to exploit chinks in Apple´s armor with iPhone’s multitasking issue.
The iPad is launching next month using the iPhone OS as well. While most people can tolerate the lack of multi-tasking on their cell phones, they probably cannot tolerate the same deficiencies on Apple’s new tablet. Lack of multi-tasking function can be a severe blow to iPads perception as a must-have digital device.
Outside of Apple´s recent efforts to become Big Brother (think sexy apps), it is difficult to criticize their devices. The one area that people seem to come back to is a lack of multi-tasking. Jobs and Co. know they need to show the world they can adapt rather than recede and the hope is that sometime this summer they will prove it.
