Google Voice Returns With A Third Party Application

For the Google Voice user frustrated with Google´s solution to App Store’s denial of entry with their Safari based HTML5 support for Voice, a new option has been unveiled.

What is most surprising is that it exists outside of the App Store, and doesn´t require a jail broken iPhone.  For those unaware, Apple removed all Google Voice apps from the App Store last year. The first shot in what now appears to be a full scale war between the two giants. A cold war this is not, as proved by Apple´s lawsuit against HTC, the maker of not only Google´s Nexus One, but many other Android phones.

Registration is easy. You will be asked to provide your existing Google Voice account information and then simply decide on whether you prefer an ad-based, lots of ads, free web app or a $6 premium app.

Voicecentral provides a web-based application that runs in Safari, but unlike Google’s own webapp, this Google Voice equivalent appears to run as an application rather than displaying itself in the Safari browser.

For those who have a jailbroken iPhone, this application is simply a copy of Google´s app that Apple removed. For those without, this is a wonderful piece of engineering for the Voice user. Free awkwardness from Google or $6 annually for a much cleaner environment?

Features include:

  • Native iPhone look and feel.
  • The ability to sync your Google Voice data.
  • Automatic and immediate updates.
  • Offline access to Google Voice data.
  • Access to Google Voice messages and transcriptions.
  • Swipes  to delete calls, voicemails, or SMS conversations.
  • Google Contacts importation.
  • Calling with Google Voice or your iPhone.
