Free Voice Guided Navigation on the iPhone with the Newest Mapquest App Update
MapQuest, the company whose name is almost synonymous with getting directions on the Internet, has released a new update to their free MapQuest 4 Mobile app that adds a voice guided navigation feature.
The feature, released as part of MapQuest 4 Mobile’s version 1.5.1 update, is officially described by the company as “basic Voice Guidance.” It does not feature spoken specifics, such as street names, but instead relies on general voice commands such as “Turn Right, Now,” and spoken warnings when a user goes off-route; actual rerouting requires a manual tap. To preserve power, the new update also includes an adjustable power setting that allows the screen to dim without switching off the voice guidance system.
While these new MapQuest 4 Mobile features are not nearly as robust as they would be in a full-fledged GPS app, they also do not carry the often-steep price tags of navigation apps, which run upwards of $60 or more. They also allow the MapQuest 4 Mobile app to compete with other looming free voice guided navigation apps, such as rival Google’s voice guidance navigation app, which is currently in beta testing. Being the first one out of the gate with voice guidance should help MapQuest secure a firm place in the market.
MapQuest 4 Mobile is available for free in the App Store. (App Store)
