AT&T: Most iPad Buyers won’t Purchase a 3G Subscription
While demand for the iPad remains unknown until its release. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson is making a few interesting claims. Firstly, “My expectation is that there’s not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription,” followed by (the iPad will largely be a ) “Wi-Fi driven product.”
While there is undoubtedly some truth to his prognostications it is a touch too early for blanket predictions.
I, for one, will be pulling out my iPad on the hour long commute (twice daily) where there is no Wi-Fi option available. What I will be doing is anyone´s guess, but it will often involve the investment I have made in a SlingBox and SlingBox mobile. Of course, while at home I will use a faster WiFi connection, I have no difficulty envisioning a number of sole 3G uses.
When speaking of issues iPhone users have had in both San Francisco and New York, Stephenson said, “We’ve got a ways to go, but we think this quarter will really move the needle considerably in both of these markets,” he said. That is all well and good, but I´m hard pressed to think of two larger markets where immediate demand for the Ipad exists.
This is either ignorance, or wisdom, time will tell.
