Rovio partners with Blue Sky Studios for Angry Birds Rio
Some people might take this as a sign that Rovio is selling out, but the majority of Angry Birds fans will probably just be thrilled that more content is headed their way. In not altogether surprising news, a major film company has taken notice of Rovio and their Angry Birds, and acted upon using the iPhone game as an innovative way to promote their next big movie. It’s called Rio, and it’s an animated flick about—you guessed it, birds. This subject matter makes its pairing with Angry Birds a natural occurrence, and we can only hope that the promotional undertones don’t take away from the bird-slinging joy that has overtaken so much of the world.
The production company is called Blue Sky Studios, but they’re better known as the people who brought us Ice Age. Rio is voiced by some big-name actors and actresses such as Jesse Eisenberg, Tracey Morgan, and Anne Hatheway. Apparently, it’s about some rare birds (Blue Macaws, to be exact) that get abducted by some bird-snatchers, and drama and comedy of the animated nature follow.
As for Angry Birds Rio, it will bring us 45 new levels, and they’ll all be created around the Rio theme. We’ll have to wait and see what shape that takes, but Rovio would really have to mess things up to interfere with the mega-successful formula that has seen them through the last year. If this works out for both Rovio and Blue Sky Studios, then you can bet that this won’t be the last movie tie-in app to hit the App Store. And Angry Birds won’t be the only popular iOS game to be affected by the fledgling promotional strategy, either.
